For a year straight, all I read
was dark erotica. After reading so many, the stories began to merge into one
another, all of them so frustratingly similar. The villain was always
boilerplate and who fell for who was always predictable. I did have some
suspicions while reading SWEET JAYNE, some of them accurate, yet while reading
this book I was surprised more often than not and completely shocked a handful
of times. I've also read a lot of suspenseful books but I can't remember
reading any other book that had me on the edge of my seat the way this book
did.
In the beginning of the book we meet Nadia, a teenager who hates her stepfather Donovan. When Nadia steps outside one day she meet Kasey. Just a few minutes after the teens bond, Kasey is abducted.
Kasey's older Brother "Ghost" (Lieutenant Kasper Grant) hates Nadia. For years he's been asking himself why Nadia didn't try to do something to stop the man from taking Kasey. Why couldn't Nadia even remember what the kidnapper looked like? For years, Kasper lives in a world of anger with all of that anger aimed directly at Nadia.
"I want to cut her only to let her heal. Then, I want to pick her scab over and over again until all her blood has run dry. I want to scar her for life."
For years, Kasper has been planning his revenge on Nadia, the stupid girl who couldn't provide the police with any detailed information that might have helped them find his sister. When Ghost finally finds Nadia, she's being introduced as the fiancé of his boss, Chief of police, Logan. If this were any other dark romance, Ghost and Nadia would predictably ended up falling for each other but Webster is much, much more creative than that!
In SWEET JAYNE there are additional characters I haven't mentioned in this review, each deeply impacting the lives of one another. I was shocked by the way the characters are interconnected, intrigued by their odd, unusual relationships, fascinated by each character's history as well as frustrated and entertained by the character's reasons for behaving the way they did. Nothing is what it appears to be yet it all makes sense in the end.
Somehow, K. Webster was able to create a complex, intricate story without making it confusing and without leaving a single loose end. She was able to weave a crazy story that is actually plausible and believable, doing this without resorting to having the characters encounter, "coincidences" to explain away things (a huge pet peeve of mine). In my opinion, Ms. Webster is nothing short of brilliant! She's an extremely talented, innovative writer!
