Orphaned as a child, Jordan Kramer is a 28-year-old loner who lives for his work as a firefighter. It’s who he is. But his life changes when, on his way home from a fire, he finds Benny walking along the side of an isolated mountain road. With a storm coming, when Benny indicates that he’s alone in the world, Jordan follows his instincts and decides to help.

To child psychologist Duane Houser, Jordan was the one who got away when Duane got adopted as a teenager. So imagine his surprise when he’s called to help a traumatized child and crosses paths with Jordan again after all these years. Jordan is still as he remembers—stunning and strong, with a hero streak a mile wide.

Both Jordan and Duane understand a life without parents and swing into action to help Benny. The boy’s life is a bit of a mystery, and as they work together to help Benny, they rekindle feelings both had kept hidden. The chill from years spent apart quickly melts away and old love flames to life again. While helping Benny process the loss of his family, both Jordan and Duane realize that their shared desire might be within reach. Or they could have it ripped away from them all over again.

“I’m going to do my best to keep that from happening,” Duane vowed. “I can promise you that. But the first thing I’m going to need to do is find him a place to stay, and then I can start working to piece together what happened and if there are relatives who need to be made aware so they can take him.”
Jordan turned to Benny and hurried over when he slipped out of the booth and put on his coat. “Benny…,” Jordan said gently.
“I go,” he said quietly, walking toward the door.
“Where are you heading?” Jordan asked, crouching down in front of him. Duane knew that look so well. Hell, he’d had the same one on many occasions when he’d been moved from home to home. Each time he was placed, he hoped it would be good, and then when it didn’t work out, the hurt would flare all over again.
Benny shrugged and shook his head.
Jordan looked over at him. “Please. Just sit down a minute. Okay?” Damn, the way Jordan acted with him was almost textbook beautiful. Instead of raising his voice, he kept quiet and got Benny to sit back down. Jordan returned to where Duane stood. “He can stay with me. I have an extra room, and I’m sure we can set up something for him.” Jordan shook his head slightly. “I can’t believe I’m doing this. But I won’t let him just disappear into the system. I found him, and I think he trusts me a little.” Jordan swallowed, his eyes filled with doubt. “I hope I….”
“Have you done this sort of thing before?” Duane asked. “I mean, you aren’t registered or anything.”
Jordan shook his head. “No on both counts. But I know what makes a good foster family. Lord knows I had plenty of bad ones. And I want to know what happened and to try to help him.” Jordan turned back. “He’s completely alone and lost. If he has family out there or if he’s just a runaway, then I want to help him find his way back to his family.”
Duane was torn. He knew the rules, but he also knew that things at this stage were fragile, especially in a situation like this. “Under two conditions. First, that you ask him to come stay with you, and second, that I see where you live.” At least he would know if there was something wrong with the space and he could put an end to it. He also figured that asking might help bring down some of the barriers Benny had.
“Fair enough,” Jordan said with a smile before returning to Benny, this time sitting next to him. He spoke softly, but Duane heard him, and after being told that he could stay with Jordan, Benny seemed a little less tense. “Would that be okay? You can stay with me.”
Benny nodded.
“You have to use your words and tell us,” Jordan said.
Benny looked at both of them. “Yes,” he said finally, and when Jordan put his hand on the table, Benny placed his on top of it. Duane released the breath he’d been holding as relief washed through him. There was some sort of tenuous connection between them, and at this point, Duane was going to take that as a good sign.
